The PENTAX WG-90 is a reliable outdoor camera and is designed accordingly: waterproof to a depth of 14 metres for up to two hours; dustproof against dirt; shockproof for falls from a height of up to 1.6 metres; crushproof against weights of up to 100 kg; and frostproof for temperatures as low as -10°C. Thanks to this robust construction, the WG-90 is a reliable partner even under harsh, demanding outdoor conditions.

Five-times optical zoom lens for capturing a wide range of subjects, from wide-angle to telephoto

The WG-90 features a back-illuminated CMOS image sensor with a resolution of approx. 16.0 effective megapixels. Thanks to its excellent light-gathering efficiency and a powerful image engine, the PENTAX WG-90 delivers sharp and brilliant images with a high dynamic range and low noise. In its compact, lightweight body, the WG-90 features a 5x optical zoom lens with a focal length range of 5mm-25mm (equivalent to approx. 28mm-140mm in 35mm format) to cover a wide range of scenes and subjects, from expansive landscapes to distant telephoto shots. When used with the digital zoom function, you can extend the zoom range by approximately 36x, which is equivalent to about 1008 mm in 35 mm format.

Exceptional image quality

The WG-90 is equipped with a back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, which assures excellent high-sensitivity and low-noise characteristics and high-speed readout of image data signals. Coupled with a high-performance imaging engine, this image sensor delivers a top sensitivity of ISO 6400 and super-high-resolution images with approximately 16.0 effective megapixels. It also provides advanced image processing functions, made possible by super-resolution technology, to deliver sharper, clearer, high-er-resolution images. It even offers such innovative shooting features as Handheld Night Snap mode, which automatically produces a single, blur-free composite image using several images of the same nighttime scene.

Outdoor-friendly LCD monitor

The WG-90’s 2.7-inch LCD monitor, with 16:9 proportions and approximately 230,000 dots, is treated with the advanced AR (Anti-Reflection) coating to minimize annoying glare and reflections. Its Outdoor View Setting mode lets you optimize the monitor’s brightness level for ambient lighting conditions — whether it’s outdoor shooting under the harsh sunshine or nighttime photography — to improve the visibility of an on-screen image. The brightness level can be raised or lowered in two steps to each side.

A variety of shooting modes for all types of scenes and subjects

With the WG-90, you can select a suitable scene mode from 25 options, including: e.g. Auto, which automatically selects the most appropriate shooting mode for a particular scene or subject; Landscape, which vividly expresses the greens of the trees and the blues of the sky; and Underwater/Underwater Video, which reproduces the natural colours of the underwater world by optimising the white balance to reduce the bluish tint.

The WG-90 provides six distinctive Image Tone modes to add the desired finishing touch to captured images, depending on the subject or your creative intensions. They include: Cross Process, which emulates a unique color scheme associated with a cross-processing film development technique;* Vibrant, which applies bright, rich, vivid colors; and Slide Film, which creates dynamic, high-contrast images resembling those produced by reversal film.

* Cross processing: a film development technique in which the film is treated with an unconventional developer to add distinctive colors to the image.

User-friendly tools for macro photography

Macro photography lets you capture close-up images of small subjects, such as tiny petals and insects, in great detail. The WG-90’s 1cm Macro mode lets you capture the subject from as close as one centimeter away. It features six LED Macro Lights, which are ideally positioned around the circumference of the lens barrel. In the Macro Lighting mode,* these lights allow you to adjust the illumination intensity to five different levels to assure the ideal lighting condition, while also preventing unwanted shade areas. The Digital Microscope mode** comes in handy when you want to swiftly switch from normal shooting to macro photography using six LED Macro Lights. The WG-90 allows you to creatively and effortlessly capture the amazing microscopic world, which is normally undetectable with the naked eye. A macro stand is included as a standard accessory to stabilize the WG-90 at the minimum focusing distance of one centimeter during extended observation and shooting.

* The Macro Lights can be used in Program, Movie and Report modes.

Brightness-adjustable Macro Light mode

The WG-90’s Macro Light mode* lets you turn on six LED Macro Lights positioned around the circumference of the lens barrel, and use them as a lighting device in the dark, at five brightness levels. Since this mode can be used during macro photography, it comes in handy when you want to illuminate a small space while minutely adjusting the brightness level. *The Macro Lights can be used in Program, Movie and Report modes. Flash Off + Flash On option for two-image consecutive shooting

In the Underwater mode, this creative option comes in handy when shooting underwater creatures. With a single shutter release, the WG-90 automatically captures two images — one without flash and another with flash — to minimize the time and trouble for camera control and let you concentrate on the image composition.

Creative, flexible editing of captured images

With the WG-90's ink rubbing filter (example), you can easily save your images as creative digital images. By applying this filter to a captured image, you can effortlessly create a unique image that resembles an ink stamp. Since the filter effect can be adjusted in five levels, you can even create a high-contrast monochromatic image. In addition, the WG-90 offers a range of other creative functions for editing captured images in unique and creative ways. These include a selection of digital filters and picture frames that can be used to adjust colour tones, add special visual effects, dramatise images or create different types of atmosphere.

Full HD movie recording

The WG-90 offers three recording modes for videos: Full HD movie (in 16:9 aspect ratio, with a frame rate of 30 frames per second); high speed movie for recording slow motion movies; and underwater movie, which was developed exclusively for underwater recording. In ‘Movie’ and ‘Underwater Movie’ modes, you can use the ‘Movie SR’ (Shake Reduction) mode to minimise camera shake. You can even select a single frame from a recorded movie clip and save it as a still image, or divide a movie clip into segments. The camera also features an HDMI (Type D) terminal for easy connection and playback on a TV monitor or other audiovisual equipment.

Other creative tools

The WG-90 features a range of other user-friendly creative tools that make it easier to use the camera or offer creative functions, including: Smile Capture, which automatically triggers the shutter when the camera detects a smiling face; Self-portrait Assistant, which uses LED lights to indicate when the camera detects the face of a portrait subject. The camera also features a self-timer and can be triggered using an optional remote control (O-RC1).
