PENTAX K-1 Mark II – The photographers tool

Sensor technology

35 mm full-frame CMOS image sensor with 36 MP resolution

The Pentax K-1 Mark II is equipped with a 35mm full-frame CMOS image sensor and, in combination with the high-performance PRIME IV image processor and a new type of acceleration unit, delivers vivid and lifelike images with rich colourgradations that make the images of the PENTAX K-1 Mark II so unique. In addition, the PENTAX Real-time Scene Analysis System, which uses a groundbreaking deep learning technology, effectively compensates for and corrects for image errors caused by specific lens properties in the D FA, DA, DA L and FA system lenses.

IBIS technology for various functions

The 36 MP resolution can be further expanded using the Pixel Shift Resolution System II. This Pentax technology uses the camera's IBIS technology to take four images of the same scene by slightly shifting the image sensor for each frame. This captures all RGB colour data and luminance data from each pixel, and thensynthesises them into a single, high-resolution composite image. This not onlyimproves image resolution, but also prevents the generation of false colours, reduces noise at high sensitivities, and significantly improves image quality.

The IBIS technology of the PENTAX K-1 Mark II is based on the new generation ‘Shake Reduction II’, and compensates for camera shake using a five-axis mechanism for up to five exposure stops.

Traditional body construction with an extra-bright viewfinder
The body construction is based on traditional SLR technology. An important component is a glass prism, which is a fundamental part of the viewfinder system and is therefore also crucial for the classic design of a camera. With a 100% field of view at 0.7x magnification, it offersa clear and brilliant view of the subject composition. It is not affected by stray light and provides a viewfinder image that corresponds to the original conditions without electronic influence.

Informative viewfinder display
A transparent viewfinder display offers a wealth of information without the photographer having to take their eye off the camera. Alongside various options, e.g. for a grid display or an electronic spirit level, the camera provides information on all relevant shooting data.

Flexibletilt-type LCD monitor
An innovative mechanism allows the monitor to be tilted to any desired angle along the optical axis, which makes working from different angles significantly easierand optimises shooting comfort. A special ‘airgapless’ technology, for which a special resin layer is applied between the protective screen and the LCD screen, ensures an improved display on the verystable and scratch-resistant monitor, for excellent visibility even in bright sunshine.

Sturdy construction

In addition to the classic SLR design, the PENTAX K-1 Mark II is characterised by its sturdy construction. This can be seen, for example, in the stable monitor mount, but is also omnipresent in many hidden places. For example, 87 seals in the combination of the camera and the optionally available battery grip D-BG6 ensure that no moisture or dust can penetrate the housing. Together with the matching WR or AW lenses, the camera forms a unit that can withstand even the most adverse weather conditions.

Image to render

The body itself is made of a highly rigid, lightweight magnesium alloy that provides excellent shock resistance and electromagnetic shielding. Combined with a highly rigid metal chassis that houses the core components, the K-1 Mark II forms acomposite structure that ensures outstanding durability and exceptionalreliability.

And the heart of the camera, the shutter unit, also meets professional requirements with an exceptional durability of at least 300,000 releases, ensuring reliable andlong-lasting durability.

Numerous assistance systems

For optimal image recognition and implementation, things such as the PENTAX real-time scene analysis system, which recognises factors such as the brightness distribution in the image field, the primary colour of the subject and its movement with great accuracy and efficiency and uses them for exposure control.
Among other things, the RGB light meter, which offers outstanding resolution of approx. 86,000 pixels and also recognises colours with great precision, is used for this.
In addition, the rangefinder, which has a total of 33 measuring points, 25 of which are arrangedin a cross shape, plays an important role.
After accurately measuring the shape, primary colour and movement of the subject, the data obtained is forwarded to the PENTAX real-time scene analysis system to enable particularly precise scene analysis in order to capture images with perfect exposure values, natural colour reproduction and high focusing precision.

Operation

Individuality asa fundamental component of camera design.
The camera is designed to fulfil individual requirements. Photographers' demands are as diverse as the subjects they photograph, and so the camera can be programmed according to the various tasks. Not only are numerous ‘Custom Image’ recipes or filter settings available for different image designs, but also the finesharpness, skin tones or image clarity, for example, can be individually influenced.

Function Dialand button customisation
During the design, particular emphasis was placed on ease of use. This means that photographers do not get lost in endless menus, but can quickly access important functions using a ‘Smart Function’ control dial. Supported by the option to customise various controls to suit your own working style, to programme different user functions and to store up to five memory locations for individual programming, the Pentax K-1 Mark II is a highly professional tool for photographers. This is also reflected, for example, in the exposure control through the hyper-programme automatic or in the hyper-manual mode. Whereby a ‘green button’ provides valuable services for quick exposure selection, even with old manual lenses.

A - User mode
Five differentcombinations of the most frequently used functions can be assigned to this mode to edit specific topics or creative intentions.

B - Control panel
This panel displays a list of the functions and their status on the LCD panel, while also allowing you to change the content and/or order of the listed functions to suit your shooting style.

C - Lock button
To prevent accidental setting changes, the K-1 Mark II offers a lock button to temporarily disable control buttons and dials. It offers you two lock functions to choose from:
Type 1 to prevent unintentional changes to exposure settings
Type 2 to prevent changes to operating settings.

Customisation buttons

1 - Fx1 button
A function can be assigned from seven options (default: RAW)

2 - Fx2 button
Another function can be assigned from seven options (default: outdoor view setting).

3 - AF button
One of the functions for AF operation can be assigned.

4 - Preview lever
An optical or digital preview mode can be assigned.

5 - E-dial
A set of exposure modes can be assigned.

Custom functions:
A total of 26 custom functions are available with the K-1 Mark II.

GPS module with Astrotracer

The extensive feature set is rounded off by functions such as HDR (High Dynamic Range),multiple exposure, RAW development in-camera, and, in particular, the built-in GPS module with the Astrotracer function. This not only allows you to savepositional data of the shots, but also to record a GPS log to track the movement data of the photo tour.

In addition, the Pentax K-1 Mark II has an astrotracer function. By fully utilising the GPS module, the electronic compass and the SR mechanism, the camera simplifies astronomical photography of celestial bodies without the aid of an equatorial object. Based on the latitude data obtained from GPS satellites and other influencing factors (direction of the camera and horizontal/vertical tilt) detected by the various sensors, the K-1 Mark II calculates the movement of celestial bodies and then synchronises the movement of the image sensor with that of celestial bodies with great precision. Since it captures stars without smearing even at longer exposure times, you can record faint stars that are difficult to see with the naked eye as pinpoint images.

With an optionalextension of the premium function ‘Astro Wizard’, photographers can expand thefunctions specifically for astrophotography.
