The sensor can acquire environmental information such as indoor temperature, humidity, illumination, and air pressure without needing battery replacement or wiring. A dye-sensitized photovoltaic cell, developed by Ricoh, provides power to realize "A World Without Charging" by generating electricity from indoor light. Because it can be used in freezing, high temperature, and high humidity environments, it can efficiently manage environmental information in various locations, including manufacturing sites in the food processing and manufacturing industries and storefronts in the retail sector.

In order to realize a zero-carbon society where greenhouse gas emissions are controlled, the Ricoh Group is working on a variety of technological innovations. As part of this effort, Ricoh is working to develop technologies for environmental power generation devices, such as energy harvesting. According to analytics company MarketsandMarkets, the global environmental sensor market size is estimated to grow from USD 1.4 billion in 2021 to USD 2.7 billion by 2027, at a CAGR of 10.3%, so energy harvesting technologies using light, heat, or vibration are attracting widespread attention as an effective and efficient power source that can power sensors continuously.
