MTF chart information
MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) is a kind of index used to evaluate lens performance, which represents the extent of subject contrast reproduction as spatial frequency.
The MTF chart here shows the contrast on the vertical axis, and distance from the center of the image on the horizontal axis. For the spatial frequency, 10 lines/mm shows a low frequency, and 30 lines/mm shows a high frequency, resulting in the MTF graph. On the graph, the solid line represents the S direction (sagittal direction and radiation direction) MTF, and the broken line represents the M direction (meridional direction and concentric circular direction) MTF.
In general, a low-frequency MTF is proof of a clear, high-contrast lens, and a high-frequency MTF is proof of a sharp lens with high resolving power.

HD PENTAX-D FA★50mmF1.4 SDM AW
As a standard focal length lens, it impresses with its large aperture and outstanding imaging performance.

The new generation of the ★star series
Lenses with outstanding performance are marked with a ★ (star) in the PENTAX system. There are three basic parameters that these lenses fulfil in order to receive this rating:
- Best possible image quality with uniform sharpness from the centre to the edges of the frame.
- Large aperture with particularly expressive image effect.
- High-quality workmanship and materials with high robustness and easy handling
The lenses of the D FA ★-series not only have to be optimally matched to current shooting sensors, they also have to be designed for future shooting techniques and at the same time remain as compatible as possible with older cameras.

The lenses of the new star series (DA★ and DFA★) are distinguished by a new logo, which is no longer glued on but embedded in the lens barrel.
The new standard lens on PENTAX SLR cameras
The technical specifications that a lens in the Stern series has to fulfil are one part of the development process; the other part is the target group and the range of use that the new design of a lens is intended to serve.
Here, the demand from the market for a fast fixed focal length for universal use was taken up. With a focal length of 50 mm and a maximum aperture of F1.4, the new lens is perfect, for example, for reportage shots in available light or for portrait shots with a particularly beautiful image.
State-of-the-art optical technology
Glass quality and the treatment and refinement of the individual lenses are still the most important foundations for high image quality. For example, specially selected glass is used in the manufacture of PENTAX lenses, which is treated with a High Definition (HD) coating and an "Aero Bright Coating II" developed by PENTAX. This nanotechnology-based lens coating, which is applied to the multi-layer HD coating with a uniform porous structure, reduces the average reflection in the visible light spectrum to less than 50% of conventional multi-layer coatings, effectively reducing flare and ghosting - even in difficult backlight conditions.
The use of three ultra-low dispersion glass elements and one aspherical element effectively eliminates chromatic and spherical aberrations and produces brilliant images with high contrast and sharp edges.
By minimising distortion even at close focusing distances, the new 50 mm lens delivers razor-sharp, distortion-free images across the entire focal range, from 40 cm to infinity.
The aperture design is also of particular importance. For example, the nine aperture blades in a circular arrangement at apertures F1.4 - F2.8 ensure a particularly balanced and natural bokeh. At the same time, they minimise fringing with point light sources.
The lens is equipped with the KAF4 bayonet, which allows electro-magnetic aperture control on the corresponding Ka-meras (K-1 Mark II, K-1, K-3 II, K-3, KP, K-70, K-S2 and K-S1). This ensures flawless and precise exposure control even when shooting video.
Dustproof and weatherproof construction
A standard, or all-purpose lens, requires particularly comprehensive features. The AW (All Weather) feature, with eight special sealing rings, prevents moisture and dust from penetrating the inside of the lens. In combination with an appropriately weather-resistant digital SLR camera from PENTAX, it forms a durable and reliable camera system, which is also a dependable tool in demanding shooting situations, such as rain, fog, splashing water or sub-zero temperatures down to -10°C.
The front lens is also equipped with Super-Protect (SP) coating. It reduces dirt and moisture adhesion and facilitates cleaning, e.g. of splashing water or greasy substances.
Newly developed ring SDM autofocus drive
The new HD PENTAX-D FAê 50mm F1.4 SDM AW is equipped with a new ring SDM autofocus. It has 7.5 times the torque of conventional lenses. It ensures uniformly fast and quiet focusing via the rear lens group.
